When you need motivation to give your partner a massage, you probably don’t think about the hormone oxytocin, right? I was in conversation recently about the many health benefits of couple’s massage, and the subject of oxytocin came up.
If you don’t have the incentive to do a couple’s massage, think again. Leave all your excuses behind – your hands will tire, the baby may wake up, your kids might come wandering into your love nest, or worse, work calls to say they need that report by the morning.
The truth is, once you know what oxytocin can do for you, you won’t need an excuse– you’ll make time for that couple’s massage.
Oxytocin has many names – the affection hormone, snuggle hormone, embrace hormone, love hormone and hug molecule. And these names point to the impacts it has on us. Oxytocin is made in the hypothalamus area of our brains, and acts both as a hormone – a regulator and as a neurotransmitter–communicator of information.
Research by Tiffany Field of the Touch Research Institute in Miami has found that a massage from a loved one can not only ease pain but also soothe depression and strengthen a relationship.
The results are fairly clear that massage boosts your serotonin (think well-being and happiness) by as much as 30 percent. Massage also decreases stress hormones and raises dopamine (think pleasure) levels, which helps you create new good habits. Massage reduces pain because the oxytocin system activates painkilling endorphins.
Oxytocin likewise decreases anxiety and nervousness as it advances unwinding and embracing.
Oxytocin receptors are found all through the body. So when the hormone is discharged, the impacts are felt everywhere throughout the body. This makes it the perfect natural remedy for closeness and togetherness with your partner. It operates differently in men and women but the end result is always good!
Oxytocin In Men
In men, this hormone appears to work to fortify positive qualities like trust and love – two emotions that result in holding or hugging.
In a controlled study, distributed in the November 29, 2010 diary, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, it was noted that men who were nurtured exceptionally well by their moms in early adolescence, became more grounded.
Oxytocin In Women
Oxytocin plays a key part in pregnancy and labor. It makes the uterus muscles and womb contract. It encourages labor but at the same time plays a key part in climax, holding or embracing and even in maternal conduct.
Want to get a shot of this wonder hormone, right now?
When I discuss in my book, “Couple’s Massage Handbook” – that a couple’s massage can deepen your relationship, I am referring to the wonderful benefit of the hormone oxytocin.
This is why a couple’s massage shared between you and your partner creates a special bond. Now that you know, you’ll feel inspired to roll out the mattress pad, grab a bottle of your favorite scented oil and flood your partner’s body with oxytocin.
