Father’s Day was founded in Spokane, Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas and at Serve The Goddess, we celebrate Dads in a very special way.

Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. It was based on the celebration and appreciation of her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart. He was a single parent who raised his six children.

Often times, mothers are hailed for the wonderful jobs they do as nurturers and care givers to their families. Statistics show that it’s seemingly dads who tend to find it easier to walk away from their children than moms. History tells tales of men going off to hunt or war. One might say it’s just the way it’s always been and moms are the ones left to carry the load of raising the family, mostly on their own. These days though hunting and war are hardly a viable excuse. There’s more a sense of simply walking away and leaving.

It’s sad for women and children who have to endure that kind of abandonment but thankfully it’s not always the case. There are some exceptional dads who take their role seriously and are filled with pride for their fatherhood. They are the exceptions. These are the dads who are always present and really take the role of being a dad. While every dad is precious, there’s a special place for the dads who do not fit the statistics, who rise above the norm or accepted. These are the dads who truly have a positive and profound impact on their children.

Father’s Day is set to celebrate all dads of course, but when you take the statistics into consideration, it really does tug at your heart when you witness a dad who never leaves, who stands in the storms and celebrations of his children’s lives.
